Sparky, real name Dave Clark, is an incredible force not to be underestimated within his residual Glasgow and throughout the music continuum. Press materials describe him as a pioneer of “GDM” – “Glaswegian Dance Music” – and while the term is tongue-in-cheek, the designation is not.
A key figure within his city barriers since the early 90’s, he has collaborated extensively with JD Twitch, supporting The Black Dog and Jeff Mills. His output embodies the very idea of quality over quantity, exemplified by his releases to date for Numbers, the anthemic “Portland” and the future classic “Signals” as well as his work as LUMA for Optimo Trax. The impact of these records has been considerable and have been treated to big support from who’s who of international tastemakers including Ricardo Villalobos, Gerd Janson, Jackmaster, Optimo and Ben UFO.
Hi work has been described as a mixture of “proto-techno sounds of British synth pop and the dancefloor nous of the Motor City” as well as the resemblance to a “snarling metal-bashing beast.” His solo hardware-based live set is a multifaceted mosaic that pays tribute to classic house and techno, yet always looks to the future.
Perfectly described by Resident Advisor, they state the completeness of Sparky: “explorations of ecstasy and melancholy are common in dance music, but rarely has that tension been expressed so purely.” Clark’s reluctance to release music, having held on to some for nearly a decade, is now coming to the surface. Despite his best efforts, the Sparky name is now escaping the confines of the selected few house and techno heads located in the west of Scotland.
