After moving from her native Ljubljana, Slovenia to Glasgow, via London in her late teens, Maya Medvesek, better known as Nightwave, has established herself as an internationally renowned DJ, producer, vocalist, club promoter, label boss and activist.

Since attending the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in 2011, Nightwave has explored her signature punchy sound of acid, Chicago house, Detroit techno and electro; fused with heady rave nostalgia and the latest, hybrid forms of club music.  Her releases on labels Unknown To The Unknown, Balkan Vinyl, Fabric, Ministry of Sound, Warp and her own imprint Heka Trax have secured widespread kudos and praise from the world’s most respected music outlets.

Nightwave’s 2017 debut release on Fool’s Gold Records – Wavejumper EP – received similarly rave reviews; with Complex calling it “no doubt some of Nightwave’s most impressive work to date.”  Following the success of Wavejumper, Nightwave released  the Sanctuary EP on Fool’s Gold in 2018.  From the euphoric house anthem Limelight, to the hypnotic, off-kilter, percussion-driven techno of the title track Sanctuary, this bold EP saw Nightwave returning to her early club roots and solidifying her sound; nodding to classic raves, but giving us something entirely new and exciting for 2018 clubs and festival stages. The Sanctuary EP also features Nightwave’s first vocals since featuring on Rustie’s hit Surph on Warp in 2011, and was described by Pitchfork as “club music euphoria”, while Resident Advisor called it “especially excellent”.

An in-demand remixer, Nightwave recently lent her unique sound to Django Django, Franz Ferdinand and Carpainter.  Nightwave continues to set herself apart as an exciting artist who is grounded in techno and rave club culture, yet impossible to pigeonhole and always displays the talent and nous that has attracted such diverse and respected labels to her music.

As a DJ, Nightwave has played major clubs and festivals around the globe such as Sonar Barcelona & Tokyo, Bestival, Movement, Bangface, Electric Picnic, Notting Hill Carnival, Outlook, Isle of Wight, Reading and Exit, and has shared stages with of the biggest name in dance music.  Meanwhile, at home in Glasgow, she continues to run her own club night Nightrave, which recently celebrated its 5th birthday, and has hosted the likes of Lone, DJ Bone, Kode9 and DJ Deeon.

Those unable to attend her shows, can check out her DJ mixes on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra,  Beats 1, The Fader, Dazed, NTS, Rinse FM, Triple J, Ninja Tune, I Heart Radio and Reprezent.  Her 2017 live stream for Mixmag Lab was picked-up by Pitchfork, who proclaimed “Nightwave is as engaging a performer as you’ll find behind the decks. Whether working the mix or just vibing, her energy is infectious as she slices through styles like a hungry shark.”  Following the success of her Sanctuary EP, which DJ Mag declared a “certified dancefloor killer”, Nightwave appeared live from DJ Mag HQ in 2018.

On Nightwave’s own tastemaker label Heka Trax, showcasing her passion for international, forward-thinking dance music, she’s released fresh and exciting new global club sounds from Tokyo’s Carpainter, Berlin’s Tree Trunks, Moscow’s Pixelord, Munich’s Schlachthofbronx, Glasgow’s TryTryDeDown and Bossy Love, Paris’ Big Dope P, Birmingham’s TC4, and Hit It from the label-boss herself, feat. Chicago’s legendary DJ Deeon.

Nightwave is also a passionate advocate for gender equality in the music industry; regularly hosting programming and DJ skills workshops for girls as young as eight. She also co-runs Producergirls, a free music production workshop for women, all over the UK and recently toured India as a part of British Council’s Women In Electronic Music initiative.
