After moving from her native Ljubljana, Slovenia to Glasgow, via London, in her late teens, RBMA alumna Maya Medvesek, better known as Nightwave, has established herself as an internationally renowned DJ, producer, vocalist, club promoter, label boss and activist.
Alongside previous releases on Unknown To The Unknown, Ministry of Sound and Warp, Nightwave has released and continues to release genre defying records for Fools Gold and her own Heka Trax. She continues to set herself apart as an artist that is impossible to categorise yet always displays the talent and nous that has attracted such diverse and respected labels to her music.
As a DJ, Nightwave has played major festivals such as Sonar Barcelona & Tokyo, Bestival, Movement, Bangface, Electric Picnic, Notting Hill Carnival, Outlook and Exit, and has supported a variety of artists-from LFO, Dopplereffekt and Derrick May to Death Grips, Azealia Banks, Lady Leshurr and Rustie on his tour of Australia and New Zealand.
Meanwhile, at home in Glasgow, she continues to run her own club night Nightrave, which recently toured Europe and has hosted the likes of Lone, DJ Bone, Kode 9 and DJ Deeon.
Those unable to attend her shows, can check out her DJ mixes on BBC Radio One, The Fader, Dazed, NTS, Rinse FM, Radar Radio, Triple J, Ninja Tune Solid Steel Radio, I Heart Radio, Dummy, Nest HQ and Reprezent Radio. Her 2017 live stream for Mixmag Lab, was picked up by Pitchfork, who proclaimed “Nightwave is as engaging a performer as you’ll find behind the decks. Whether working the mix or just vibing, her energy is infectious as she slices through styles like a hungry shark.”
On Nightwave’s own tastemaker label Heka Trax, showcasing her passion for international, forward-thinking dance music, she’s released fresh and exciting global electronic sounds from Tokyo’s Carpainter, Berlin’s Tree Trunks, Moscow’s Pixelord, Glasgow’s TryTryDieDown, Paris’ Big Dope P, Birmingham duo TC4, Glasgow’s Bossy Love, and Hit It from the label-boss herself, feat. Chicago’s legendary DJ Deeon.
Nightwave is also a passionate advocate for gender equality in the music industry; regularly hosting programming and DJ skills workshops for girls as young as eight. She also co-runs Producergirls, a free music production workshop for women, all over the UK.
